This one day informal workshop is for anyone who would like to find out what the Baltimore Watercolor Society expectations are for paintings to be entered for the Signature Jury. You will see examples of paintings that are acceptable and paintings that do not meet the expectations. The criteria is explained with real paintings. You may also bring one of your own paintings to see if it might qualify or you will find out how to complete your picture. Those pictures are not restricted from entering the Signature Jury process in the future.
Registrants will bring one matted and framed painting to go through the critique process.
Concept:
Some paintings can be considered "high concept"and communicate bold ideas, reflection on the human condition or a particular worldview, while others attempt to evoke a mood, capture a subtle feeling or tell a story. Is each painting successful in communicating the conceptual intent of the artist?
Originality:
Is the subject, the treatment, the composition , or the overall approach of the paintings fresh and original?
Composition:
The Elements of Design
Line, Shape, Color, Value, Texture, Space Form
The Principles of Design
Balance, Unity, Emphasis, Variety, Pattern, Proportion, Movement, Rhythm. Gradation
Technique:
Do the paintings demonstrate adequate mastery of technical components to accomplish the goals of the artist? ( Not all technical aspects equally important in any particular painting.) Some technical elements which could be considered include:
Paint applications and brushwork, Drawing, Linear and areal perspective, Understanding of unique aspects of water media, Color mixing, Treatment of edges.
Consistency:
Do all of the paintings submitted for consideration demonstrate a consistent style and quality? (All four paintings do not need to address the same subject matter.)
Presentation:
Do the matting and framing of physical submissions (or the photographic quality and electronic file preparation of digital submissions) demonstrate professionalism and create a favorable presentation of the artwork?
Objective Versus Non-Objective Art Submissions:
The same considerations of concept, composition and design, originality, technique, consistency and presentation apply to both objective and non- objective paintings. However, the relative weights and merits of each may differ, again depending on the goals of the artist, the style, the subject matter, the painting size and format, and other factors.
