We are pleased to have nationally recognized artist Stacy Lund Levy in this one day workshop.

"Painting Animals in Watercolor"

Capture the personality of an animal, as well as the feel of its soft fur.  Learn to select key features that make each animal unique and how to paint fur, short and long, black and white, and all coat colors and textures in between.

Stacy will provide a photo reference or the artist may bring a reference of their own. If you bring your own reference, please be sure that it is in focus, large enough to see all the details, and has a true white and a true dark.  The techniques from this class can be used to paint a variety of subjects.

Workshop attendees should have an understanding of basic watercolor techniques.

Artist and Baltimore native, Stacy Lund Levy has been creating art in many forms since kindergarten.  She is a former medical illustrator turned professional fine artist and teacher. Currently she teaches classes at Carroll Community College and North Carroll Senior Center, as well as watercolor workshops in and around Maryland. She is both a board member and signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, and will become a signature member of both the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Watercolor Societies in September.  Her work can be viewed at, on Instagram @Artorangutan, and in the ManneqART Museum.

Please pack a lunch and beverage. Light refreshments will be available

A completed drawing on watercolor paper.  Stacy will provide a reference, or you may bring a reference image of your own.  Size doesn’t matter, but no smaller than 8x10”.

Paper: Feel free to use the brand of good quality paper that you are comfortable with.  Please bring several extra sheets to practice the various color combinations and textures. I recommend Arches, Fabriano, or Saunders Waterford.  I use Arches 300 lb.

Paint: Different brands produce different results, specifically burnt sienna.  I prefer Daniel Smith or Windsor & Newton.

Ultramarine Blue

Burnt Sienna

Permanent Alizarin Crimson

Yellow ochre

Cerulean Blue

Cobalt Blue

Pyrrole or permanent Orange, or organic vermillion

Masking Fluid:

I prefer Pebeo, because it is pale blue and you can see where you are applying it.  Please bring what you are comfortable with.

Various sizes (again, whatever you are comfortable with).  I typically use a 1” flat or larger for backgrounds, as well as #6 or 8, #10 or #12 or #14 rounds.  I prefer Ascota Perla, Loew Cornell Ultra Round, and Princeton Aqua Elite

Rigger brush for details

A small Hake brush 1” or 2”

Small comb brush ¼ or ½”.

Standard stuff:
