Workshop Instructor:
RUSSELL JEWELL Ed. D, AWS, TWSA, NWS
The Baltimore Watercolor Society is excited to feature a workshop with our 2024 Mid-Atlantic Juror, award winning plein air artist and educator Russell Jewell. He is a masterful plein air painter with a Doctorate in art education and 35 + years of teaching art to students. We will be learning, in a studio setting, skills plein air painters and studio landscape artists use to bring light and life to their landscapes in a quick and expressive way.
WORKSHOP SUBJECT:
Capturing light in the landscape, as if painting in plein air
Painting en plein air or in the studio, the artist attempts to bring to fruition a spontaneous moment in time… forever. This workshop will be a studio experience where participants focus on painting atmospheric light in the landscape discovered in photos provided by the instructor. Whether the landscape be urban or rural, light will be the guiding factor. Working from provided photos, artists will paint with the instructor in a timely manner as if in an ever-changing plein air environment. No reason to fear, participants will be taught ways to become more timely. Participants will be encouraged to work from quarter-sheet to 9x12 size in order to paint quickly yet think deeply. While painting relatively small in size with brevity, the class will seek to breathe fresh air into still photos. The pace of the class will allow artists to have the opportunity to explore multiple paintings and experience various demonstrations per class. Each painting below, and the one above, were created in less than one hour of painting time.
This workshop is an effort to give participants not only mental information, but multiple, physical and visual problem-solving approaches that can be applied specifically to watercolor painting. Jewell will teach participants how to better plan their painting before they put brush to paper, thus, allowing the artists to see the desired target painting and possess the confidence to go for it.
RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE:
Jewell’s workshop is geared towards independent personal painting development; it is open to all levels of artists. Participants will learn how to approach and solve their own concerns in watercolor, regardless of their artistic ability. Participants will see their own artwork in a different light - a light that will allow them to move further down their path towards success.
All levels are welcome but students should have an understanding of the watercolor medium.
SUPPLY LIST:
Watercolorist should feel free to bring whatever materials you normally use to paint..
Paints
Feel free to use whatever paints suit your style, however, I encourage you to work with tube paints in order to have fresh squeezed paint on a daily basis.
My basic palette includes:
Cadmium Red Light
Hansa Yellow Light
Quinacridone gold
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Violet
Manganese Blue
Raw Sienna
Burnt Sienna
Cerulean Blue
Cobalt Blue (Daniel Smith)
Lilac (Holbein)
Neutral Tint
Brushes
I use various brushes, mostly rounds and mops and some Chinese. Bring the brushes you like to use.
However, if you are in need of brushes, I will be using the brand, “Grabie” brushes. If you have not discovered them, they are nice synthetic brushes at an incredible price (Pack of 9 brushes less than $50 online).
Paper
Feel free to use whatever brand of good quality watercolor paper that you are comfortable on which to transfer your reference drawings. I personally use Arches 300# rough or cold-press paper, however, 140# is fine as well. Purchase 3 full sheets of paper which you can divide into quarter sheets or a 12 x 16 watercolor block.
We will be dividing the paper in half with tape, for some exercises .
I would prefer you have your own small 6x8 – 9x12 quality sketchbook for both notes and sketches as we go.
Also bring several sheets of scrap paper to practice the various exercises or test colors.
Additional Supplies
Caran d'Ache Neocolor II Artists water-soluble crayon set of 10 - They are available through Cheap Joe's. I will introduce you to Caren D’ Ache Neo Color II (NOT Neo Color I) water-soluble crayons. We will use these crayons as a tool that aids our design. We will not be using them on the final watercolor painting.
water containers
paper towels or small towel
block or board to attach watercolor paper
Mechanical Pencils with size 9 lead
I also prefer a “Pentel Click Eraser” which is encased like a pen that clicks to produce more eraser length.
Art tape (the white one) OR masking tape- We will tape paper off with masking tape or painter’s tape to gain a sharp edge to the final painting.
12 inch ruler
table covering to protect your table from paint splatters
PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Please do not see this potential painting as “your masterpiece” it is only the first step towards advancing your future painting skills.
I will provide participants with the painting images and instructions, via email, prior to the workshop with instructions in order to be prepared to paint together.
I will have images from which to paint but feel free to provide your own photos to explore on the final day of class if you wish to paint a personal image. Also, consider shooting your own photos during the week once you understand the type of imagery we seek.
Photos with high contrast are best.
