The class size is limited to 44 people, and the program cannot be split with another person.

Program Instructor: 

Scott Stevenson has been a Brand Ambassador for DANIEL SMITH Manufacturing since 2019, focusing on providing quality education to art supply retailers and watercolor organizations across North America. With over 20 years in the art industry, he has collaborated with many respected manufacturers of art materials. In his spare time, Scott enjoys watercolor painting, music, and traveling. He resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Traci.

Join us for a fun and interesting conversation with Scott Stevenson, Sales Representative and Brand Ambassador for DANIEL SMITH Manufacturing.

Event Outline:

1. Introduction to Daniel Smith

  • Brief history of the company

2. Paint Making Process

  • Overview of Daniel Smith’s proprietary methods for PrimaTek and Synthetic Colors

3. Lightfastness

  • Explanation of what lightfastness means and how colors are tested for longevity

4. Consistency

  • Discussion on maintaining consistency from batch to batch

5. Granulation

  • Definition and its role in creating texture and uniqueness in watercolor

6. Quinacridone

  • Introduction to Quinacridone: history and unique properties

7. Exploration of the Daniel Smith Color Chart

  • Layout of the color chart: Synthetic, PrimaTek, and Luminescent
  • Formats available: 15ml, 5ml, Watercolor Stick, Half Pan
  • Importance of Lightfastness Ratings
  • Understanding Staining: its meaning and impact on techniques
  • Identifying Granulation: which colors have textured effects
  • Importance of Transparency
  • Discussion of pigment information

Hands-On Experience:

  • Opportunity to sample 12-15 colors in a personal way.
  • Attendees will receive a dot of paint from the tube to swatch and discuss pigment attributes.

Materials Provided:

You don't need to bring any supplies except note taking paper/s or a notebook.

  • Daniel Smith Literature: "How We Make Paint," PrimaTek brochure, Daniel Smith color chart - To take home
  • 1 sheet of Fabriano Artistico 140lb Cold Press Watercolor Paper 
  • Scott Stevenson Dot Card - To take home
  • A loaner Princeton Aqua Elite Brush
  • Daniel Smith Watercolor Stick - To take home
  • Paper towel
  • Water
  • Water cup

Program LOGISTICS:

Please note, during this workshop two participants will be sharing a long rectangular table as we will be only testing the paint samples on a small watercolor paper and not making a complete painting.

Price:

$10.00 for BWS members (Signature Artists, Associates, and Students) and

$15.00 for non-BWS members.

The class size is limited to 44 people, and the workshop cannot be split with another person.

Confirmation of your registration will be sent upon receipt of your check or online payment. Checks must be received within 5 days of registration to be considered as registered.

Remember that these workshops fill up very quickly. When filled, you can join the waiting list.

Waiting List:

BWS maintains a workshop and program waiting list once the event is filled. If registrants cancel, BWS fills the openings from the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis. There are often cancellations, so it is worthwhile joining the waiting list.

BWS adds names to the waiting list according to the date and time.

You can't join a waiting list before registration opens.

Waiting List registrants - Do not send payment until you are informed of an opening and have been sent an invoice. Any check sent before you have been informed you have a spot will be destroyed.

Cancellations and Refunds:

This is a non-refundable event.

Workshop Hours:

Mar 27, 2025 -  Hawthorn Center doors open at 12:30 PM to allow check-in. Program instruction begins: 1:00 PM and end at 3:00 PM.

Please plan to leave by 3:15 PM

BWS will no longer be providing plastic bottles of water. BWS would like to be environmentally responsible and reduce plastic waste. Cool water is available at the water fountain and the tap in the kitchen. You are welcome to bring your own beverages.

Payments:

BWS prefers online payments, but if you send a check, please have it made out to BWS and reference Nishita Jain Program  in the notes section of your check. Please email Program chair at yoginidahiwadkar@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org to get the mailing address.

Wearing Masks

  • If you feel more comfortable wearing a mask, feel free to do so at any time.
  • If you are immune compromised and your doctors recommend you only be around people wearing masks, be advised BWS will not be requiring masks for this workshop.
