Program Description

Discover the delicate beauty of flowers through the vibrant and expressive medium of watercolor. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn essential techniques for painting florals, including wet-on-wet, layering transparent washes, and capturing petal and leaf shapes with values and chroma.

Perfect for beginners and intermediate artists alike, this class will guide you step-by-step. We'll explore a variety of flowers such as roses, peonies, wildflowers, and greenery, with an emphasis on color harmony and composition.

By the end of the lesson, you’ll have your own finished floral watercolor painting and the confidence to continue painting your own botanical creations.

What you’ll learn:

Basic watercolor techniques (wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, glazing, lifting, layering)

How to mix and control colors

How to paint various floral shapes and arrangements

Tips for creating depth and movement in your composition

Supplies:

  • Watercolor paper, watercolor paints, brushes (round sizes recommended), pencil, eraser, water container, and paper towel.

Preparation Instructions:

About 30 days before the event, you will receive images from BWS which Karen will use for the class. The base drawing must be completed on the watercolor paper before the workshop begins.

BIOGRAPHY


Karen Frattali, BWS, PWCS, GWS, WSA, LWS, KWS

Karen Frattali has been an artist and teacher in the area for the several decades. In addition to working locally, Karen teaches around the Middle Atlantic states for other art groups, competes in national competitions and is a past officer of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. She has achieved signature status in several of the country’s watercolor organizations. A complete biography appears on her website: www.karenfrattali.com. Over the years she has been honored to participate in the juried events of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, Baltimore Watercolor Society, Louisiana Watercolor Society, Lancaster County Nat’l Juried Show, Berks Art Alliance Nat’l Juried Show, Watercolor Society of Alabama, Georgia Watercolor Society, Kentucky Watercolor Society and others.

During her tenure as art teacher, she has guided many artists to become accomplished painters themselves. She maintains current weekly classes in Kennett and Strasburg PA. She is represented by Strode’s Mill Gallery of West Chester.

Program LOGISTICS:

Price:

$80.00 for BWS members (Signature Artists, Associates, and Students) and

$120.00 for non-BWS members.

The class size is limited to 22 people, and the workshop cannot be split with another person.

Please pay online if possible. The payment system allows the use of Credit Cards. Otherwise, checks should be made out to Baltimore Watercolor Society. Write the name of the program in the memo. Reply to this email to get the mailing address. 

Confirmation of your registration will be sent upon receipt of your check or online payment. Checks must be received within 5 days of registration to be considered registered.

Remember that these workshops fill up very quickly. When filled, you can join the waiting list.

Waiting List:

BWS maintains a workshop and program waiting list once the event is filled. If registrants cancel, BWS fills the openings from the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis. There are often cancellations, so it is worthwhile joining the waiting list.

BWS adds names to the waiting list according to the date and time.

You can't join a waiting list before registration opens.

Waiting List registrants - Do not send payment until you are informed of an opening and have been sent an invoice. Any check sent before you have been informed you have a spot will be destroyed.

Cancellations and Refunds:

Please note, this is a non-refundable program as you will get the recording of the program for 2 months to watch.

BWS makes decisions and incurs fixed costs based on the number of initial registrants. Cancellations can affect these costs even if there is a waiting list as people are not always still available. In addition, cancellations incur processing fees and other costs paid by BWS as well as requiring extra time and organizational effort. Refunds for extenuating circumstances are at the discretion of the event coordinator.

From registration date to 60 days prior to the event = 90% refund 

59 days to 21days prior = 75% refund

20 days to 8 days prior = 50% refund

7 days or fewer = no refund
