President’s Palette

BWS President Jennifer Kohn Murtha

I’m one of those people who thinks that education is essential for the whole of life. It doesn’t matter how old or how young- education is everything! Learn until you can’t, is my motto.

To that end, I’m sharing with you some of the programs and workshops BWS is sponsoring this year.

Let’s start with March 8, 2026 from 1-3 pm. Are we ever lucky?!  BWS is offering a free Zoom demo with Karen FratalliCreating Vibrant Floral Compositions by Incorporating Light and Shadow. Karen’s work is beautiful, with soft yet powerful colors, using only transparent pigment. Check it out and register! This demo will be expanded into a not-to-be-missed  programon May 2-3, 10-1 pm.

Next up is excellent Richard Scott, whose work, to me, is a cross between Childe Hassam’s and John Singer Sargent’s and yet, it’s wholly his own. Composing Watercolors-A Totally Different Approach. This will be a free Zoom Demo, but he’ll also be doing a two-day program on June 6-7, topic still under discussion. I can’t wait to find out, can you?

I told Yogini Dahiwadkar, our program and workshop chairthat when I heard that awesome Frank Spino was going to teach an in-person workshop entitled Citrus and CrytalsI started singing in my head, Oranges and Lemon Sang the Bells of Saint Clements. Seriously, if you want to learn how to paint citrus, no one can do better for you than Frank Spino. The workshop will be held from September 1-3; 10-4 pm. BUT, if you can’t make time for the workshop, Frank will be offering a free Zoom Demo on May 10, 10-12, Citrus Painting. Don’t miss this!

Last call for workshops: me! I’ll be teaching a workshop entitled Watercolor Portraits from Life, at my alma mater, The Schuler School of Fine ArtsSeptember 28-30, 9-4 pm. Six models, the best light in the world and watercolor. How can you resist?

Actually, I lied. Last call for workshops is  Watercolor Landscape with Barbara KiwakApril 20-22, 2026, from 10-4. Locations to be determined but a new place every day. Color me signed up for this one!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: education is everything, And that, My Dears, is all she wrote.

P.S. If you have any questions, please contact Yogini Dahiwadwar at yoginidahiwadkar@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org or me at jkmportraits@gmail.com

2026 Member Exhibits: Watch for Dates and Details

This year won't have a Mid-Atlantic Exhibit, so we have aggressively scheduled opportunities to show member works. The deadline to register in the 2026 All-Member Exhibit at Manor Mill has already passed; the show will open on March 14 and run till May 9. Join us at the opening reception on March 14, from 2–5 p.m.

Our next all-Member exhibit will be at the Meeting House Gallery in Columbia, MD, and will run May 16–July 25. The call for artists for this exhibit went out on February 1, and registration is open through April 1, 2026. More information is available here.

Two Signature Member exhibits are planned for the remainder of the year: a summer exhibit at The Creative Alliance Gallery in Baltimore and a winter exhibit at the Delaplaine Gallery in Frederick, MD. The calls for artists for these two events will be announced in the spring. Stay tuned for details!

BWS Semi-Annual Jurying for Signature Artist Status Registration

For those interested in attaining Signature membership status, the next opportunity to submit paintings for March jurying begins now! Please check the application packet for detailed information including the deadline for submission date. Look under Upcoming Events on the BWS website and scroll down to open the notice for jurying. Questions can be sent to janetarsenault@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org.

                    New and Noteworthy

                    Jennifer Azar, BWS Publicity Chair

BWS was honored to be featured in a recent Artists Network article, "An Enduring Legacy: Celebrating the Persistence of Watercolor Societies."

“Watercolor gets a bum rap,” comments our very own BWS President Jennifer Kohn Murtha. But not here! The article, by Scott Maier, describes the history and value of the medium’s professional associations; it is illustrated with photos of BWS activities and member artists’ work, including paintings by Joanna Barnum, Matthew Bird, Matt Fenton, and Luis Perez.

As the article remarks, “Watercolor societies continue to serve as vital engines of connection, education, and professional growth for watercolor artists.  Through exhibitions, mentorship and shared experience, they help transform solitary studio practice into a vibrant, sustaining community.  In doing so, organizations like the BWS ensure that the medium remains relevant and resilient in an ever-evolving art world.”

The article highlights how BWS is instrumental in promoting the value and endurance of watercolor and watercolor societies. To read the full article, click here:

From the Archives: A Look Back 25 Years

by Jim Sandford, Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Chair

This month we take a look back 25 years, to the March 2001 BWS Newsletter (it will open in a new tab).  Here are some things that caught my eye.  I’m sure you will find others:

                    • Diane Gibson was BWS President. (She served in this role from mid-2000 to mid-2002.)  Sharon Green was Vice President.
                    • If you wanted to be considered for Signature membership you had to deliver your (presumably framed) paintings to Roland Park.
                    • Carolyn Councell had recently won first prize in BWS’s show at Columbia Art Center.
                    • Preparations were underway for the Mid-Atlantic Exhibition, April 13-May 26 (at Strathmore).
                    • Joel Popadics (our recent Mid-Atlantic juror) advertised a show of his and his students’ works at the Ridgewood (NJ) Arts Institute.  According to the schedule of advertising fees elsewhere in the newsletter, this set him back $10.
                    • BWS announced the discontinuation of membership cards, which apparently no longer served any purpose.
                    • Jennifer Kohn, now BWS President Jennifer Kohn Murtha, was Chair of Exhibits.
                    • Fritz Briggs (1937-2024), former BWS President, remained active in BWS leadership as Protocol Advisor.
It seems like a long time ago, and no time at all, at the same time.  Enjoy!

                    BWS Seeks Student Members!

Do you know of a young art student who could benefit from joining the BWS?

If they are between the ages of 16 and 25 and are interested in art or are pursuing an art degree or certificate, they are eligible to join BWS for the discounted membership fee of only $20.

Benefits of student membership include: BWS social activities, programs, and workshops, plus receipt of the monthly newsletter. Students may also participate in those BWS exhibits that include student members.

Let’s encourage our student artists in their pursuit of the watercolor medium! We look forward to their participation and, as with all members, their fresh ideas on possible activities and directions for BWS.

                    Support BWS Sponsors

In addition to donating towards a Mid-Atlantic award, Holbein has provided 15ml sample paint tubes as hand-outs/door prizes for BWS workshops.

                    American Frame Alliance Discount

The more members spend, the more BWS will receive in merchandise certificates to be used for a Mid-Atlantic Award.

Please be sure to log into American Frame to sign up.

                    STEP 1:
Before purchasing a frame at American Frame, each BWS member should go to the American Frame Alliance discount website at https://learn.americanframe.com/alliance-discount, register by filling out the form "Sign up to Receive your Discount," select Baltimore Watercolor Society in the drop-down list of “Arts Club or Organization” and press "submit."

                    STEP 2:
You will receive a reusable discount code as well as earn credit for your purchases for BWS. Be sure to check ‘Agree to Terms and Conditions.’ Once your American Frame account is linked to the Alliance Program, all of your orders will benefit BWS, even if you choose another discount to use for that order (e.g., free shipping).

If you are having trouble, American Frame’s phone number is 1-800-537-0944.

American Frame is a second-generation, woman-owned, family-run company, dedicated to serving artists like yourself since 1973. Our mission is to provide excellence in custom framing products, fine art printing and related services while advancing a socially responsible company that gives back to the arts. As such, we are proud to be counted among the list of donors to the BWS Mid-Atlantic Regional Exhibition. If you need design assistance or have questions about the website, we are here to help. We offer free samples, phone support, as well as face-to-face ‘zoom style’ consultations via our Virtual Showroom. Our goal is to serve you in the way that makes you most comfortable.

Volunteer Opportunity: Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Awards Chair

We are seeking a dedicated Awards Chair to lead our sponsorship and prize efforts for the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Regional Exhibition. This 8-month position (starting in December) is essential for securing the medals, cash prizes, and merchandise that make our exhibition so prestigious.

                    Key duties include:

                    • Coordinating with local and national donors for sponsorships.

                    • Managing the prize database and awarding process.

                    • Preparing certificates and presenting awards at our June reception.

This is a fantastic role for someone who is highly organized, enjoys networking, and wants to play a vital part in rewarding the talent in our society.

                    Teach? Update Us Please

Whether you’re teaching at a university or providing one-to-one tutorials, if BWS members can sign up to learn from you, we want to know what you’re doing.

The Baltimore Watercolor Society has a list of members who teach on its website -- that’s a great resource. However, after introducing a “Teacher Tuesday” feature to BWS Facebook and Instagram, Social Media/Publicity Chair Lia Nigro discovered it’s not always easy to define what’s going on at the moment.

“I’ve run through the list and profiled everyone where I could immediately find information on current classes. But I know there are more teachers out there!” BWS social media is a great way to get free publicity and reach new potential students, especially if your watercolor instruction goes beyond beginning levels. Want in? Just send a note to publicity@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org.

Already profiled in a “Teacher Tuesday”? Don’t be shy about providing updates. We look forward to hearing from you.

BWS members may submit a 60-word announcement gratis to be listed under the heading “Member News,” along with one image related to the announcement. Submissions are due by the 15th of the month preceding publication date, and may be edited for length or clarity. Please e-mail your submissions to the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Be sure to include your phone number in case there are any questions about your announcement.
