Kathleen's Comments
It was indeed an honor to be invited to select the paintings and awards for the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition. The quality and variety of the work presented was a joy to behold. I wasn’t able to include all the work that I would have liked because of size restrictions for hanging, but certainly would have included more work. Also, many of the artists that entered two pieces presented me with a real challenge as to which piece was the stronger work. Many of those paintings are also exceptional. Congratulations to all the winning artists! Your work stood out amongst a fine group of paintings.
When selecting paintings I first look for a good composition supported by a strong value pattern and color unity. If the work is realistic, I look for competent drawing skills. I ask myself whether or not the painting makes sense. Are things drawn to scale? Do I know what the artist is saying? Oftentimes I find that too many objects have been added to complicate and confuse the viewer. Simple design is the often best route to follow unless you are a very experienced painter. My tips for making your piece stand out are to use eye catching pattern and/or storytelling, through the objects in your work. If your work wasn’t included in the show this time please don’t be discouraged. If I had kept all the rejections notices I have received over the years, they would fill an entire desk drawer. I still get my share of rejections. Instead of taking it personally, I have learned to look at it differently. I understand there were just other pieces that were more appealing to the judge. I also have found that rejection has helped me grow. Getting an honest critique of rejected work can provide you with new insights. Those insights can then motivate and help you to move forward with new goals… you can’t lose unless you quit!
Working on our art can be such a wonderful escape from the negativity around us. We are essentially creating our own world. Artists are never bored because we are always creating. I hope that you all continue to grow and that your work brings joy into your lives.
All the best,
Kathleen S. Giles
