President’s Palette
Every month, I must write my “President’s Palette” for our newsletter. True confessions, I love writing and newsletters are fun to write. It’s all good. Every month, I must think of what to say. This month, I’m going to do something a wee bit different. Don’t all plotz--it won’t hurt. It occurs to me that everyone, naturally, knows that I’m the president of Baltimore Watercolor Society, but do they know that we have seventeen people on the board and do they have any clue as to what they do? I thought not. Well, dear members, I’m going to introduce you to our truly outstanding, matchless board. Then, you can appreciate what they do for you and for all of us. 1. Matt Fenton, Vice President. Matt is a calm presence in our organization, who runs a great bus trip to wherever we want to go and does it with assurance and a smile and is a fine support for me. So, dear members, now you know who does what. And now you can see why I feel so fortunate to work with such an exceptional board. Am I not blessed? Is BWS not blessed too? Jennifer Kohn Murtha |
Deborah Conn Wins the 2025 Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Artists’ Choice Prize
Each year the Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition awards one additional prize beyond those determined by the exhibition juror. The Artists’ Choice prize is awarded to the Mid-Atlantic Exhibition painting receiving the most votes from BWS Membership and non-members who applied to the exhibition. This year’s clear winner was Deborah Conn’s painting Hiding in Plain Sight. Deborah is a Watermedia Master Elite (WME) Signature Member of BWS. This is her 13th acceptance into the Mid-Atlantic Exhibition. Congratulations Deborah! |
Mid-Atlantic Exhibition News by Jim Sandford, Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Chair Reflecting on the 2025 exhibition…. The 2025 Mid-Atlantic Regional Watercolor Exhibition is now in the books. Thanks to all the participants, organizers, and volunteers who made this exhibition a success. Catalogs were mailed in December, so if you were signed up for a printed catalog and did not receive it, please let me know. The online exhibition and the electronic catalog remain accessible through the BWS Mid-Atlantic web page. Thanks once again to our 2025 exhibition juror, Joel Popadics. Joel’s juror talk is still available at https://youtu.be/pxCZfRA9QyM?si=9ThgREHDKPXEpRVl And special thanks to our Publicity Chair, Jennifer Azar, and Social Media Chair, Lia Nigro for their tireless efforts getting the word out about the exhibition. Features on the 2025 exhibition have been published in Watercolor Artist, the British magazine The Art of Watercolour, and its French counterpart, L’Art de L’Aquarelle (see image below). Looking ahead…. We are changing things up for the next exhibition. While many have noted that while the Kentlands Galleries provided beautiful exhibition spaces, painting sales have consistently been less than hoped for, and the differing exhibition hours between the two galleries have been problematic. It’s time to try something new, hence… The next Mid-Atlantic Exhibition will be held at Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria, Virginia in April and May 2027. Iain Stewart (AWS, NWS) of Opelika, Alabama will be our juror of entries and awards. Green Spring has been very welcoming over several of our visits to survey the gallery and negotiate terms. They are delighted to be hosting our historic exhibition. It is hoped that moving the exhibition from a Fall to a Spring schedule will help boost sales, but it will also create an extra gap between the Fall 2025 and Spring 2027 exhibitions. The 134-year history of the exhibition shows that this has been the case now and then over the years. The Fall 2026 space will be devoted to other BWS exhibitions and events. A detailed schedule will be announced in the coming months. For now, please plan on the following approximate dates:
If you want to plan your paintings to aim for one of the themed awards, we will be continuing with the same themed awards we had in 2025:
Additional details will be announced in the months to follow. |
The history of BWS and a notice of our 2025 exhibition, published in L’Art De L’Aquarelle, No. 67, Déc 2025–Fév 2026. |

From the Archives: The Story of William G. Evans, BWCC President 1951–55
by Jim Sandford, Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Chair
The Baltimore Water Color Club’s (BWCC, the predecessor to the Baltimore Water Color Society) 46th Annual Exhibition took place January 16– February 11, 1951 at the Baltimore Museum of Art. A review of the exhibition published in the Sun on January 14 provides a biography and tribute of William G. Evans, who was the BWCC President from 1951 to 1955. I’ll let the article speak for itself. https://newspapers.com/image
|
| ![]() The BWCC’s Mr. Evans was not the same William G. Evans as the advertising executive who is credited with creating Baltimore’s Charm City campaign. Another Google search overwhelmed by other circumstances. |
BWS Seeks Student Members!
Do you know of a young art student who could benefit from joining the BWS?
If they are between the ages of 16 and 25 and are interested in art or are pursuing an art degree or certificate, they are eligible to join BWS for the discounted membership fee of only $20.
Benefits of student membership include: BWS social activities, programs, and workshops, plus receipt of the monthly newsletter. Students may also participate in those BWS exhibits that include student members.
Let’s encourage our student artists in their pursuit of the watercolor medium! We look forward to their participation and, as with all members, their fresh ideas on possible activities and directions for BWS.

Volunteer Opportunity: Mid-Atlantic Exhibition Awards Chair
We are seeking a dedicated Awards Chair to lead our sponsorship and prize efforts for the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Regional Exhibition. This 8-month position (starting in December) is essential for securing the medals, cash prizes, and merchandise that make our exhibition so prestigious.
Key duties include:
Coordinating with local and national donors for sponsorships.
Managing the prize database and awarding process.
Preparing certificates and presenting awards at our June reception.
This is a fantastic role for someone who is highly organized, enjoys networking, and wants to play a vital part in rewarding the talent in our society.

Upcoming Events
Note: The above Upcoming Events summary only displays the start date for each event. For full details please click on the event, or visit the Events page. Teach? Update Us Please Whether you’re teaching at a university or providing one-to-one tutorials, if BWS members can sign up to learn from you, we want to know what you’re doing. The Baltimore Watercolor Society has a list of members who teach on its website -- that’s a great resource. However, after introducing a “Teacher Tuesday” feature to BWS Facebook and Instagram, Social Media/Publicity Chair Lia Nigro discovered it’s not always easy to define what’s going on at the moment. “I’ve run through the list and profiled everyone where I could immediately find information on current classes. But I know there are more teachers out there!” BWS social media is a great way to get free publicity and reach new potential students, especially if your watercolor instruction goes beyond beginning levels. Want in? Just send a note to publicity@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Already profiled in a “Teacher Tuesday”? Don’t be shy about providing updates. We look forward to hearing from you. MEMBER NEWSBWS members may submit a 60-word announcement gratis to be listed under the heading “Member News,” along with one image related to the announcement. Submissions are due by the 15th of the month preceding publication date, and may be edited for length or clarity. Please e-mail your submissions to the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org. Be sure to include your phone number in case there are any questions about your announcement. Boxed-off featured ads are available for $25 and may include up to 100 words and one image. Contact the Newsletter Editor at newsletter@baltimorewatercolorsociety.org for details. All images are the property of the artists and protected by copyright. No image can be used without the written permission of the artist. Peg Sheridan is teaching "Beginning Watercolors" on Saturday March 7, from 10–4, near Lexington, VA. More information at www.theworkshopattimberridge.com. J. M.
