As you can imagine, we are still basking in the success of the fabulous BWS exhibition at McBride Galleries in Annapolis. The paintings were all outstanding and so diverse – in themes, execution and styles. If you missed it in person, I certainly hoped that you went online for a “virtual visit.”

There were about 75 amazing paintings presented and unfortunately we couldn’t give awards to each one, but they certainly deserved it. The public also agreed with that assessment as there were 15 and possibly 16 paintings sold. (I think this may be a record.) This is a testament not only to the talent of our artists but additionally to Kathy Daywalt who organized the exhibit and the McBride Gallery, one of the most prestigious in Annapolis, and its owner Cynthia McBride and her staff who hung the show beautifully and then marketed it to their discerning clientele.

On a dreary, rainy morning in early November I took a bus with 15 or 16 residents from the community where we live, down to Annapolis, to view the exhibit. I had previously taken them to our last three “in-person” Mid-Atlantic Exhibits and discussed the award winning paintings. This time Abigail McBride (who was our Juror of the Carroll County show) joined us and pointed out her favorite paintings and lectured the group about composition, light, styles and the fine techniques and tricks artists use to create depth and emphasis. Their most frequent comment to me was “This exhibit looks just like the Mid-Atlantic ones, only smaller/more intimate!” And it did – a mini Mid-Atlantic.

And speaking of the Mid-Atlantic Exhibition...get ready, here it comes! We are scheduled to be back in person, complete with a workshop. I already know that you will love our Juror and Workshop Instructor as the artist is really outstanding! You will notice that I’m not giving many hints – I’m going to let Sharon Green, our Mid-Atlantic guru, fill in the details in her notice on the following pages.

Sharon has also been busy training her replacements – yes, it is taking two people to replace her, but then she has been managing this complex, mind-boggling job for 11 years. Stacy Lund Levy, our former Jurying Chair, and Susan Bradley, who has newly joined the Board. Stacy and Susan are following Sharon’s instructions closely and under her tutelage are learning how to set up next year’s exhibit. I know from long years of working with Sharon that the task is all-encompassing and somewhat akin to not just “herding cats” but “juggling cats” but I’m sure that Stacy and Susan can manage it – they plan to “divide and conquer”!

I don’t know about you but (even if Winter has just barely started) I’m really looking forward to June and seeing the sunlit gallery at BlackRock filled with magnificent images and then experiencing the joy of the Awards Ceremony. Even thinking about it conveys a sense of normalcy. I hope that in the coming months, the newest variants of Covid will diminish in ferocity and transmission rates and that you stay healthy and strong during this difficult time. I pray also that there will soon come a time when we can all be together again, painting side by side, without masks and restrictions. I can hardly wait.

Sherry

    Introductions

This month we would like to introduce you to Susan Bradley who is one of the two new Co-Chairs of the Mid-Atlantic, taking over from Sharon Green who is retiring after June. Susan has been a BWS Signature Member since September 2017 and is a resident of Gaithersburg, MD. When asked to submit her resume for the newsletter she really surprised us. Welcome, Susan!

After many years providing management and exhibit support to Smithsonian museums and government consulting firms, Susan Bradley followed her international bureaucrat husband and her dreams to live in Paris, from 2004-2011. It was always the plan to paint later in life, and moving to France brought the plan to reality with no paying job and new-found time on her hands. She took drawing and painting coursework at the Ecole des Beaux Arts as well as other workshops and classes in the Washington area. In 2009, Susan and Anne McDermott, an Australian (and another international bureaucrat spouse) produced the exhibit “Deux Regards” with paintings and photos at the International Energy Agency.

Susan has a B.A. in Social Sciences from the University of California, and a M.A. in American Studies with emphasis on 19th Century American Art from the University of Maryland, College Park. She also attained a Superior level certificate in French language and culture from the Universite de Paris, Sorbonne. She has been a resident in Montgomery County off and on since 1979.

Susan is currently President of the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association, a BWS Signature Member and a member of the Potomac Valley Watercolorists.
